The Van Gogh Passion
(1h 35min) by Dorota Kobiela, Hugh Welchman
Featuring the voices of Pierre Niney, Gérard Boucaron,
Genre: Animation, Biopic
Henceforth, the Clément Foundation proposes a film show under the stars for each of its exhibitions. The screened film is chosen by the exhibiting artist, in consideration of the connections it shares with his or her own artistic approach. Raymond Médélice, a film enthusiast and the author of several small animated films, has selected "The Van Gogh Passion."
Thanks to an unprecedented process, this film — a true work of art — achieves a fusion of cinema and painting. It transforms the filmed image into a painted image, in the manner of Van Gogh. After a classic shoot featuring real actors against green screens, works by Van Gogh or in the manner of Van Gogh were embedded in the image through compositing, and then animated as computer graphics. Ninety-four canvases by the master are reproduced exactly in the film, and 31 others are reproduced in large part, or partially. It is as if the Doctor Gachet, his daughter, René Secretan, Adeline Ravoux, the postman Roulin and his son, had abandoned their frames to live before your eyes, trying desperately to solve — like a police investigation — the mysterious death of Van Gogh: murder, suicide, or accident?
